MYSTERY DUST JACKETS BY ABBEY ALPHABETIZED BY AUTHOR

There were actually two artist brothers surnamed van Abbe, who illustrated dust jacket covers under the name of “Abbey.” Nearly all of the illustrations on this page are the work of the elder brother, Salomon van Abbe, with the exception of A Modern Portia at right. The younger brother Joseph's signature is recognized by a more curved tail on the 'y.'

In the heart of London, John Ashton—the man from Australia—has been murdered. It seems clear that the motive was not robbery, and as he apparently had no acquaintances in town, the exposure of the murderer appears hopeless. Nevertheless, Mr. Fletcher accomplishes it in a story that keeps the reader in suspense to the very last word.		When the great actor, Bassett Oliver, failed to turn up to a rehearsal which he himself had called, his business manager guessed that something had happened. It had. But it took more than one set of brains to discover the truth, and another set of very curious circumstances was mixed up in it. A young dramatist, helps to solve the mystery.

A young man, on inheriting a great fortune, comes to London from the West Indies to consult an old friend of his father's upon financial arrangements. He finds that his father's friend has just died, so he consults the other partner in the firm. The latter, aided by an attractive lady secretary, proceeds to exploit him.		(Terrific story!) Overtaken by a terrific storm on a walking tour through Cornwall, Doctor David Launceston takes shelter at what seems to be an important country mansion. At its entrance he is attacked by a savage dog which, after a struggle, he manages to master. He is then admitted to the house, which he finds to be a perfect manor of mystery.

The governors are a group of American millionaires who work financial deals together. Phineas Duge, the leader, has suspicions of his colleagues, and in order to get them into his power he resorts to a ruse to procure their signatures on a document which gives him a pull over them. Then comes a struggle for the document. It is stolen from Duge, and all parties become involved in the search for it.		When Lord Wolfenden saw, in the supper-room of the Milan Restaurant, a beautiful woman and became acquainted with her by saving the life of her elderly companion, the mysterious Mr. Sabin, he little knew the web of intrigue into which he was entering. It was impossible not to love the unknown, and it seemed equally impossible to marry her when her identity was known.
